Guide to the New 5-Day Wellness Leave for Teachers

For years, the dedication of our public school teachers has been measured by long hours, unwavering commitment, and the resilience to balance heavy workloads with the needs of our learners. But we know that you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Recognizing the "quiet crisis" of burnout in our classrooms, the government has taken a historic step toward supporting those who educate the next generation. Under the new Civil Service Commission (CSC) policy and subsequent Department of Education (DepEd) guidelines, public school teachers and non-teaching personnel are now entitled to a 5-day Wellness Leave (WL) every year.

What is the Wellness Leave for DepEd Personnel?

The Wellness Leave is a dedicated time-off benefit designed to help educators recalibrate. Whether you need a mental health day, time for a physical wellness activity, or simply a well-deserved break to recover from the demands of teaching, this policy is for you.

Key Benefits:

  • It’s Extra Time Off: The 5 days of Wellness Leave are exclusive. They do not deduct from your Vacation Leave (VL) or Sick Leave (SL) credits.
  • Inclusive Coverage: This applies to all DepEd personnel—teaching, related-teaching, and non-teaching staff—regardless of employment status.
  • Flexible Usage: You can take your leave consecutively (up to 3 days at a time) or on separate days throughout the year.

How to File Your Wellness Leave

To avail of this benefit, the formal requirement is the accomplishment and submission of the CSC Form 6 (Application for Leave). Ensure this form is properly filled out and submitted to your school's administrative office for approval.

Important Guidelines for Teachers:
  • File Your Application Early: Applications should generally be filed at least five days before your intended leave (except for emergencies).
  • Confidentiality: Your health information is protected under the Data Privacy Act of 2012.
  • Class Continuity – The Principal's Responsibility: It is the responsibility of the School Principal or School Head to manage and assign a substitute or relief teacher. It is NOT the job or responsibility of the teacher on leave to find their own replacement. The administration is mandated to ensure that learners remain supervised without burdening the teacher who is exercising their right to rest.
  • Use It or Lose It: The Wellness Leave is non-cumulative and non-commutable to cash.

Why This Matters for Teacher Mental Health

As DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara noted, your health—especially your mental health—is vital to your ability to serve our learners. This policy is a proactive move to ensure that our public servants are not just surviving, but thriving.

You deserve to prioritize your well-being without the added stress of administrative logistical work.
