GSIS expands coverage: 24/7 Personal Accident Insurance for All DepEd Personnel

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has announced an expansion of its insurance coverage for the Department of Education (DepEd), providing 24/7 personal accident insurance for all DepEd personnel.

GSIS in a mass text message sent to its members on July 21, "Ang DepEd ay kumuha ng group personal accident insurance sa GSIS para sa lahat ng mga guro at kawani nito upang magbigay proteksyon sa lahat ng klase ng aksidente."

(DepEd procured a group personal accident insurance from GSIS for all its teachers and personnel to protect against all kinds of accidents.)

This coverage includes death and medical expenses benefits, offering enhanced protection and peace of mind for educators and staff.

This initiative marks a significant enhancement of the partnership between GSIS and DepEd, which began last year under the leadership of Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte. The partnership initially focused on insuring DepEd's school buildings and now extends to personal accident coverage for DepEd employees.

The new insurance coverage underscores the commitment of GSIS and DepEd to safeguard the welfare of educators and administrative staff, ensuring they have support in times of need. The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), established by Commonwealth Act No. 186 and Republic Act No. 8291 (GSIS Act of 1997), is a social insurance institution that provides a defined benefit scheme for its members in exchange for monthly premium contributions. GSIS members receive various social security benefits, including life insurance, retirement, separation, and disability.

GSIS administers the General Insurance Fund under RA 656 (Property Insurance Law), offering insurance coverage for government assets and properties.

GSIS coverage includes all government workers except:
- Members of the Judiciary and Constitutional Commissions (covered by separate retirement laws)
- Contractual employees without an employee-employer relationship with their agencies
- Uniformed members of the Armed Forces, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, and Bureau of Fire Protection
- Barangay and Sanggunian officials not receiving fixed monthly compensation
- Employees without regular monthly hours or fixed monthly compensation

The GSIS benefit package includes compulsory and optional life insurance, retirement, separation, and Employee's Compensation (EC) benefits. Additionally, GSIS provides loan products such as Multi-purpose Loans, Policy Loans, Enhanced Emergency Loans, Enhanced Pension Loans, and Pensioner's Emergency Loans to assist with financial needs.
