DepEd may reverse MATATAG Curriculum to one hour per subject to ease load

The Department of Education (DepEd) plans to revert to a one-hour duration for subjects under the MATATAG curriculum to alleviate teachers' workload.

Education Secretary Juan Edgardo "Sonny" M. Angara announced this during the budget hearing at the House of Representatives last Monday. The decision comes after DepEd listened to teachers' concerns regarding the Matatag curriculum, which shortened subject time to 45 minutes.

Angara stated that a department order is nearing completion and will be issued soon. "We are preparing a department order to introduce flexibility, which means we'll return to six one-hour subjects," he said in English and Filipino.

"The Matatag curriculum's 45-minute lessons were designed to maximize learning time for students," Angara explained. "However, we have carefully considered the feedback from teachers and schools facing challenges with this approach."
