DepEd plans to extend class days of SY 2020-2021

The Department of Education (DepEd) Curriculum and Instruction Strand is planning to extend the academic calendar for the School Year (SY) 2020-2021 which is currently set to end on June 11.

"Wala pang definite number of weeks na extension pero isa 'yan sa tinitingnan namin," said Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio, DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction in an interview.

["There is no definite number of weeks extension yet but that is one we are looking at," said San Antonio]

Usec. San Antonio added that this is to give students the opportunity to pass their academic requirements.

"Para ang lahat ng mag-aaral, lalo na iyong medyo nagkakaroon ng challenges, ay mabigyan ng pagkakataon na maisumite ang mga kailangang gawin," San Antonio added.

["For all students, especially those who are having some challenges, will be given the opportunity to submit what needs to be done," San Antonio added.]

While there are no face-to-face classes yet, DepEd is constantly monitoring the implementation of distance learning as well as providing flexibility in passing the requirements of students according to source.

Implementation of face-to-face classes

San Antonio said that senior high school students possibly be the first to have face-to-face classes if the government allows it again.

"Naniniwala kami na iyong mga senior high school learners, lalo na sa tech-voc (technical vocational track), ay pwedeng maging priority," ani San Antonio sa panayam ng ABS-CBN News.

"We believe that senior high school learners, especially on tech-voc (technical vocational track), can be a priority," San Antonio said in an interview with ABS-CBN News.

According to San Antonio, the agency continues to prepare for the dry run of limited face-to-face classes while awaiting the approval of President Rodrigo Duterte and the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases.
