Sec. Angara files resignation as DepEd Secretary amidst Presidential courtesy resignation order

Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara has reportedly filed his courtesy resignation, responding to President Bongbong Marcos' directive for all Cabinet secretaries to tender their resignations. The move comes as the Marcos administration undertakes a "bold reset" and recalibrates its priorities following the recent midterm elections.

Secretary Angara's resignation, effective immediately, signals his support for the President's decision to evaluate the performance of each department and realign government efforts with the public's expectations.1 In a statement, Angara emphasized the importance of a seamless transition for the benefit of the education sector. "The vital work of the Department must continue with no roadblocks," he stated, underscoring his commitment to ensuring continuity in DepEd's operations.

President Marcos' call for courtesy resignations, announced earlier this week, aims to give him "elbow room" to determine who will continue to serve in line with his administration's recalibrated agenda.3 The President stressed that this is "not about personalities—it's about performance, alignment, and urgency."4

Angara, who assumed the DepEd leadership in July 2024, succeeding Vice President Sara Duterte, has had a relatively brief but impactful tenure, focusing on building upon existing programs and addressing challenges within the Philippine education system.5 His resignation allows the President to appoint a new leader for the crucial education portfolio.

The series of courtesy resignations from various Cabinet members reflects the administration's intent to implement a more focused and performance-driven approach in the coming years . 6 Government services are assured to remain uninterrupted during this transition period.

May 22, 2025: Today, I submitted my courtesy resignation as Secretary of the Department of Education, effective immediately.

This decision aligns with the President's directive for Cabinet-wide courtesy resignations.

It has been the greatest honor of my public life to serve the Filipino people as Education Secretary. I am committed to a smooth and seamless transition for my successor. The vital work of the Department must continue with no roadblocks.

I extend my sincere gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve in his Cabinet.
