DepEd CO to release clarification memo on 4-day workweek today

Following the President’s mandate for a shortened workweek, the Department of Education (DepEd) Central Office announced that a clarifying memorandum is expected to be issued today, March 7, 2026.

The upcoming memo aims to provide specific operating guidelines for the country’s largest executive agency as it transitions to the new schedule starting Monday, March 9.

While President Marcos Jr. exempted "frontline services" from the four-day shift, DepEd officials are working to define how this applies to schools and administrative offices.

The department faces a unique challenge in balancing energy conservation with the uninterrupted learning of millions of students.

Key points expected in the memorandum include:

• Administrative vs. Teaching Staff: Whether the 4-day week applies only to non-teaching personnel in the Central, Regional, and Division offices.

• Class Schedules: If schools will shift to longer hours (compressed school week) or maintain a 5-day instructional calendar through blended learning.

• Utility Caps: Specific targets for reducing electricity and fuel consumption in DepEd facilities, in line with the President's 10% to 20% reduction goal.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara is reportedly in consultations with the Bureau of Human Resource and Organizational Development (BHROD) to ensure the new arrangement does not diminish the quality of basic education services.

"We are finalizing the parameters to ensure that while we comply with the President's energy-saving measures, our service to the learners and teachers remains efficient," a DepEd spokesperson stated this morning.

DepEd is just one of many agencies under the Executive Department—joining the DILG, DSWD, DPWH, and DA—rushing to release internal guidelines before the Monday deadline. The shift is part of a broader government-wide strategy to combat the national economic strain caused by the ongoing global oil crisis

As of this afternoon, the DepEd Central Office is coordinating with the Civil Service Commission (CSC) to ensure that any "compressed workweek" for teachers still meets the required instructional hours for students.
