BBM orders removal of Antique School Principal over Graduation Gown Controversy

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has stepped in and directed the Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara to dismiss Principal Venus Divinia Nietes from her position at Col. Ruperto Abellon National School (CRANS) in Laua-an, Antique. This action comes after a contentious incident on April 15th during the school's end-of-year event, where Nietes reportedly instructed students to remove their graduation gowns, sparking public condemnation.

The President's directive was confirmed by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), with Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro stating that while Nietes is no longer the principal, her teaching credentials remain valid.

The controversy escalated following a public appeal from Laua-an Mayor Aser Baladjay, who urged the DepEd to promptly address the situation due to concerns about Nietes' leadership and conduct.

This isn't the first time Principal Nietes has faced criticism regarding her management style. In September 2023, while heading Laua-an National High School, she was met with a protest by over 500 students and more than 20 educators who voiced their disapproval of her leadership, citing claims of bullying, intimidation, and misuse of authority.

The Department of Education has yet to announce who will take over as the new principal of CRANS.
