DepEd shifts to 3-grading period system starting SY 2026-2027

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has officially approved the transition to a three-term school calendar starting School Year (SY) 2026-2027.

The decision was finalized during the 8th DEPDev meeting held this Thursday, March 19, following a joint endorsement from the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Social Development Committee-Cabinet Level (SDC-CL).

Key Highlights of the Policy
• Implementation Date: Effective starting the 2026-2027 school year.
• Structure: Shift from the traditional four-grading periods to a three-term (trimestral) system.
• Primary Goal: To maximize instructional time and ensure "learning continuity."

The administration cited frequent disruptions as the primary driver for this reform. By restructuring the calendar, the government aims to buffer the curriculum against:

* Extreme Weather: Minimizing the impact of typhoon-related class cancellations.
* Holiday Density: Accounting for the numerous national celebrations that often break the momentum of a traditional quarter.

"The goal is to ensure our students have enough 'time on task' to master the curriculum, regardless of the seasonal challenges we face in the tropics," the committee noted.

Under the new system, the academic year will be divided into three distinct phases. This typically allows for more in-depth discussion of subjects before a major assessment period, potentially reducing the "cramming" culture associated with shorter quarters.
