Senator Sonny Angara named as New DepEd Secretary

“President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has announced that he is set to appoint Senator Juan Edgardo ‘Sonny’ Angara as the new secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), replacing Vice President Sara Duterte who resigned last June 19, 2024, effective July 19, 2024,” announced by Presidential Communications Office (PCO) on Tuesday, July 2.

Angara's term will officially begin on July 19, following the conclusion of outgoing DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte's term on July 19. Known for his advocacy for free tertiary education and increased funding for public schools, Angara brings extensive experience and a deep commitment to educational advancement.
