Malacañang declares June 28 as Regular Holiday for Eid'l Adha

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang has declared June 28, Wednesday, a regular holiday nationwide in observance of Eid'l Adha, the Islamic Feast of Sacrifice.

In a proclamation signed by Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the holiday is in accordance with Republic Act 9849, which declares Eid'l Adha a regular holiday in the Philippines.

"Now, therefore, I, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., President of the Republic of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare Wednesday, June 28, 2023, a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid'l Adha," the proclamation read.

Eid'l Adha is one of the two major Islamic holidays, along with Eid'l Fitr. It marks the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, and is a time for Muslims to celebrate the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God.

The holiday is also a time for Muslims to gather with family and friends, to pray, and to give to charity.

The declaration of June 28 as a regular holiday is a welcome respite for many Filipinos, who are currently facing a number of challenges, including rising inflation and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The holiday is also a chance for Filipinos to learn more about Islam and the Muslim community, and to build bridges of understanding and cooperation.
