School Year 2020-2021 may not open in June 2020
Classes in all public elementary and secondary schools in the country for School Year (SY) 2020-2021 may not open in June 2020.
A source said that if COVID-19 continues to wide-spread in the country and if there is partial breakdown of DepEd and not all its offices are functioning as they should, then possibly SY 2020-2021 may not open in June 2020 as planned.
DepEd undersecretary and spokesperson Nepomuceno Malaluan recently said that if there is “failure to contain” the disease and the country remains be under Code Red, Sub-level 2, “then part of that is we will not be able to continue with classes.”
Malaluan also said that in this situation, this is “not something that is within the direct control” of the DepEd.
The undersecretary also said that if the current COVID-19 crisis condition of the country continues “will mean that we will not be able to hold classes, then we will obviously have to adjust accordingly.”

A lawmaker urged the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Technical Education and Skills, Development Authority (TESDA) and the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) to postpone the opening of classes in June to August or September due to severe health threats of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
“Huwag po nating ipilit buksan ang school year sa June. Mabuti nang nag-iingat at daig ng maagap ang masipag,” said Jocelyn Tulfo, ACT-CIS party-list Representative.
"Maraming eskuwelahan ang kinailangang gamitin bilang staging area, relief goods distribution center, o temporary community quarantine facility. Marapat lamang na malinis nang maigi ang bawat sulok ng mga paaralan," the representative added.
Tulfo also said that the Brigad Eskwela will not be enough to ensure that every school will be ready, disinfected and safe for use by June.
