Teachers get perks but no salary increase

The government will give away free fries, discounted museum tickets, marked-down eyeglasses and various other perks teachers during the Teachers’ Month as token of gratitude amid a continuing clamor for substantial salary increase.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones yesterday lauded teachers for their continued commitment to educating Filipino students in time for the fourth industrial revolution.

“In this digital age, we put a premium on the crucial role of teachers as guides, managers and listeners amid technological innovations and other emerging trends in education,” she added.

This year’s theme, “Gurong Pilipino: Handa sa Makabagong Pagbabago,” stresses the crucial role, loyal service, and dedicated commitment of teachers in developing globally minded citizens, nurturing families, strengthening communities, and building the nation.

“The NTM is a great avenue to honor those who are in the teaching profession and to express gratitude for the positive influence of teachers on Filipino learners,” DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones stated.

No salary hike for teachers in 2020 proposed expenditure plan

According to news posted by abs-cbn in their official website on September 2, there is no provision for an increase in teachers' salaries in the 2020 proposed expenditure plan despite having the biggest cut of the proposed budget.

DepED Secretary Leonor Briones however allayed concerns, saying DepEd is discussing ways to increase the salaries of teachers with other government agencies.

According to DepED, one method that the agency is looking at is faster promotions for teachers so they can have higher salaries.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) meanwhile alleged that DepEd is not even acting on the proposal to increase teachers' salaries. Raymond Basilio, ACT Secretary General, said the budget department is still waiting on DepEd to submit a proposal for the pay hike.

"Maraming mga teacher na matagal nang nakapako ang kanilang salary grade dun sa kanilang entry level position. Ang masakit marami sa mga guro kung ano ang position nila sa pagpasok, yun parin ang kanilang position hanggang sa pag-retire," Basilio said.

The Secretary said DepEd is also proposing for additional benefits for teachers.
