DepEd Postpones Nationwide School Safety Drills

The biggest nationwide disruption for August 25 affects the Department of Education (DepEd). Due to the prevailing bad weather and the localized cancellation of face-to-face classes, DepEd has officially postponed the nationwide Simultaneous School Safety Drill for Active Attack Incidents originally scheduled for Tuesday.

The drill will now be conducted during the first week of September 2026. DepEd noted that this suspension will also give them time to align the activity with the recommendations of disaster preparedness and psychosocial support experts, ensuring the drills remain trauma-informed and age-appropriate for students.

Local LGU Class Suspensions for August 25

Due to the unpredictable nature of the monsoon rains, local government units (LGUs) are continuously assessing their weather conditions. While localized #WalangPasok announcements are actively rolling in for August 25, parents and students in low-lying and flood-prone areas should remain on high alert.

Currently, LGUs in Northern and Central Luzon are heavily monitoring the situation following Monday's suspensions. Keep refreshing your local LGU Facebook pages, as Mayors typically announce localized suspensions for Tuesday late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning.

• Benguet
- Kapangan - Pre-School to Elementary , public and private schools, shift to alternative learning modalities
- Atok - Pre-School to Senior High School, public and private schools, shift to alternative learning modalities
- Buguias - face-to-face classes for preschool to elementary (public and private)

- Kibungan - Daycare to Senior High School, public and private schools shift to alternative learning modalities

• Pampanga
- Macabebe– face-to-face classes in all levels, public and private, until Wednesday, August 26
- San Simon– face-to-face classes in all levels, public and private, until Friday, August 28, except for Concepcion Integrated School
- Santo Tomas– face-to-face classes in all levels, public and private, until Friday, August 28

• Pangasinan
- Bugallon– face-to-face classes in all levels (public and private)
- Infanta– all levels (public and private)
- Mangaldan– face-to-face classes for preschool to senior high school (public and private)

Latest Weather Update: PAGASA Advisory No. 7

The localized suspensions are largely driven by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), which continues to dump significant amounts of rain.

According to PAGASA's latest Weather Advisory No. 7 issued at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 24:

Heavy Rainfall Outlook: Areas including Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro are forecast to experience 50 to 100 mm of rain from today through Tuesday noon.
Hazards: PAGASA warns that this volume of rain can cause localized flooding, especially in urbanized, low-lying, or river-adjacent areas. Landslides are also possible in highly susceptible mountainous regions.
Other Affected Areas: Light to moderate (and at times heavy) rains are currently affecting vast areas of Northern and Central Luzon, including Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, and Cagayan.
