HB seeks to raise World Teachers' Day Bonus to 3,000

More than 950,000 public school teachers may soon receive a more substantial token of appreciation, as a bill has been filed in the House of Representatives seeking to triple the World Teachers’ Day Incentive Benefit (WTDIB) from the current PHP1,000 to PHP3,000.

Eastern Samar Rep. Christopher Sheen Gonzales, House Assistant Minority Leader has filed House Bill 4531, which seeks to triple the World Teachers' Day Incentive Benefit (WTDIB), raising the annual cash gift for over 950,000 public school teachers from PHP1,000 to PHP3,000.

Filed on September 11, the bill aims to transform what began as a simple item insertion in the General Appropriations Law of 2019 into a permanent, more substantial benefit. This move would solidify the WTDIB's place as a lasting expression of gratitude, distributed annually no earlier than October 5, coinciding with the global and national celebration of World Teachers' Day.

"Teachers are the bedrock of nation-building," Gonzales stated. "By increasing the WTDIB, we are not just providing financial assistance - we are sending a clear message that the country values the dedication and sacrifice of our educators."

The proposed increase is viewed not just as a financial aid to help teachers cope with the rising cost of living, but as a tangible acknowledgment of their professional commitment. The congressman, a House committee member on basic education and culture, emphasized the ripple effect of this investment.

"When we invest in teachers, we invest in the next generation of Filipinos... This is more than just an incentive. This is an expression of national gratitude," he added.

The push for this legislative change comes as the country observes National Teachers' Month (September 5 to October 5), culminating in World Teachers' Day on October 5.

Declared by UNESCO and locally recognized as National Teachers' Day through Republic Act 10743, October 5 highlights the critical role of educators in shaping societies.

HB 4531 represents a meaningful step toward creating an environment where Filipino educators feel truly valued, supported, and empowered to continue their tireless work in building the nation's future.
