DepEd teachers now eligible for 2023 Performance-Based Bonus, says teachers' group

After an initial setback, Department of Education (DepEd) personnel have been declared eligible for the 2023 Performance-Based Bonus (PBB), a major victory for a teachers' group that had long criticized the bonus system.

According to Benjo Basas, national chairman of the Teachers' Dignity Coalition (TDC), the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has officially reconsidered DepEd's appeal, making its teachers and employees eligible for the long-awaited incentive.

Basas stated that while an official resolution is still pending, DBM Secretary Amenah Pangandaman confirmed the development in a meeting with the coalition. The TDC had previously slammed the initial disqualification, calling the PBB a "flawed, burdensome, and demoralizing" system that unfairly penalizes educators for bureaucratic inefficiencies.

While welcoming the news, the TDC emphasized the need for a more "just, simplified, and genuinely rewarding" incentive framework, promising to continue pushing for reforms to the PBB policy.
