New Senior High School Curriculum Starts next school year

The Department of Education (DepEd) is set to commence a phased implementation of the revised Senior High School (SHS) curriculum starting in School Year (SY) 2025-2026. This initiative aims to streamline the current curriculum by reducing the number of core subjects, thereby allowing students to concentrate more on work immersion and practical skills development.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted the necessity for flexibility within the educational system, stating that decreasing the number of SHS subjects would provide students with additional time for on-the-job training or work immersion. This approach is intended to enhance SHS graduates' employability, even without extensive work experience.

In line with this, DepEd plans to reduce the core subjects for Grades 11 and 12 to five or six, down from the current 15 subjects per grade level. The proposed core subjects include communications, Filipino history, mathematics, science, computing, and life or soft skills. The remaining subjects will be offered as electives, allowing students to specialize in areas aligned with their interests and career aspirations.

The decision to revise the SHS curriculum follows directives from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who has called for rationalizing the SHS program to better align with industry needs and global educational standards. DepEd is actively collaborating with various stakeholders, including the business sector, to gather input on the skills and competencies that are in demand in the workforce. This collaborative effort ensures that the revised curriculum produces job-ready and responsible graduates.

The new SHS curriculum will be implemented in SY 2025-2026, with a pilot run planned for select schools. DepEd is committed to providing schools with the autonomy to determine how they will implement the revised curriculum, particularly in offering elective subjects that cater to students' diverse interests and career goals.

This initiative is part of DepEd's broader efforts to enhance the quality of education in the Philippines, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their chosen career paths.
