OFFICIAL STATEMENT: On the opening of classes for SY 2020-2021

April 21, 2020 - Finally, the Department of Education (DepEd) published its official statement on the opening of classes for School Year 2020-2021 to clarify and answer some questions and inquiries running around on everyone's heads.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT:
On the opening of classes for SY 2020-2021

In order to provide an appropriate answer on the issue of the school opening for SY 2020-2021, DepEd has been conducting consultations for the past 2 weeks, with its executive committee, management committee, civil society, business sector and education experts. Parents and learners also expressed their views on Facebook, and other forms of social media.

The law provides that school opening shall start on the first monday of June but not later that the last day of August. The responses favor any day in August as the preferred opening of the school year.

DepEd is conducting a much bigger survey of more than 700,000 respondents, not only on the opening of the school year but also matters related to social distancing; and online classes, cellphone, television or radio as alternative or complementary approaches to learning. The results will come out in a few days.

In the meantime, the IATF is seriously considering recommendations to the President on the ECQ.

All these factors will influence our final choice for the opening of the school year. We are accelerating the preparation of our Learning Continuity Plan (LCP), preparing benefits for our teaching and non-teaching staff, ensuring the readiness and cleanliness of our school infrastructure, and developing alternative delivery modes of learning.

It will be recalled that at the height of the Marawi uprising, our call was “education must continue!” In the midst of the Coronavirus crisis, our call remains the same: Education must continue whether face-to-face or virtual, with or without physically going to school.

What we assure our learners, parents, teachers, and the general public is that any decision we will make for the continuation of learning will have their health, safety and well-being as primary consideration.

We shall overcome.

Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones

Unless a vaccine for Covid-19 is developed, there is too much risk to send our chilren physically to school. Online classes os preferred but there is a need to consider the availability of internet facilities. Telecom companies step up with the aid of the government to ensure provision of signals and gadgets to students.

No amount of any assurance for implementing social distancing in schools is realistic versus the safety of our children.

We shouldn't put the children to a risky situation..we should consider opening of classes on August or Sept..or up until this virus is totally gone in circulation.

biological warfare has no face no heart and no compassion... education is important but health would take priority .. explore mediums as long as we do not endanger the lives of students and teachers...

Hi everyone, as I have a nephew's and niece's I hope the deped and/or the gov't consider opening the classes december or until there is already vaccine available for covid19. It also depends if the healthcare system is able handle the disease. Better for the meantime seek other alternative option for education be done online instead of going to schools and universities.

Why not ramp up testing and concentrate on locking down virus laden areas, instead of a blanket lockdown that affects us all. Waiting for vaccine will take years, and with the stupidity of k12 implementation, God knows how old a child will be before entering the workforce.

I think the virus will set the timeline during times.Let us all be realistic.
The price to pay is too high(our kids our future) and it is not the rigtt time to take the risk. It's just months or maybe a year slashed from our education system it is not that bad. After thii Covid-19 we can start again where we stopped.
