With Typhoon Ofel affecting various regions, multiple local government units (LGUs) have announced class suspensions at all levels to ensure the safety of students and staff.
The Department of Education (DepEd) reminds the public of DepEd Order No. 37, s. 2022, which outlines automatic class suspension guidelines, ensuring that families can make quick decisions without waiting for individual LGU announcements when specific warning signals are issued.
Key Highlights of DepEd Order No. 37, s. 2022 for Automatic Class Suspensions
1. Typhoons:
In-person, online classes and work from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and Alternative Learning System (ALS) are automatically canceled in schools situated in Local Government Units (LGUs) issued with Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) 1, 2, 3,4, or 5 by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
If the TCWS is issued when classes have already begun, the school shall immediately suspend the classes and work and send everyone home if it is safe. However, schools must keep students and personnel safe in school if traveling has become unsafe.
2. Heavy Rainfall Warnings:
- Orange or Red Rainfall Warnings issued by PAGASA automatically suspend classes in all affected areas to ensure student and staff safety.
3. Flood Advisories:
- Areas placed under flood warnings by PAGASA also automatically suspend classes, as flooding poses significant safety risks.
