Proposed 2024 Salary Increase for gov't employees
Senator Jinggoy Estrada has advocated for a new salary increase for government workers in the Philippines known as Senate Bill No. 2611, which seeks to establish the sixth iteration of the Salary Standardization Law (SSL VI).
He suggested that if Congress does not pass the proposed Salary Standardization Law VI, an executive order (EO) could be issued as an alternative. This approach was previously taken by former President Benigno Aquino III in 2016.
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has instructed a study on the competitiveness of government salaries compared to the private sector. Estrada is optimistic that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) will present a comprehensive study on the feasibility of a salary increase in time for the 2025 national budget preparations, considering the rising cost of living.
Estrada's proposed SSL VI outlines a four-tranche salary increase for government workers, totaling a 46% hike over the implementation period. The first tranche proposes a 10% increase, followed by 11%, 12%, and 13% in subsequent tranches.
