DepEd suspends face-to-face classes on October 5, 31  and November 3

The Department of Education (DepEd) has issued a memorandum on conducting classes in the upcoming National and World Teachers' Day celebration and the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.

The memo was addressed to Atty. Revsee A. Escobedo, Undersecretary for Operations, all Regional Directors, all Schools Division Superintendents, all other concerned parties, and all public school heads was signed by Atty. Michael Wesley T. Poa, Undersecretary and Chief of Staff.

The memo stated that to allow teachers to participate in activities in celebration of World Teachers' Day on October 5, 2023, and give them ample time to complete election-related duties for the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections on October 30, 2023, all in-person classes in public elementary and secondary schools, including community learning centers of the Alternative Learning System (ALS), shall shift to the various blended learning modalities (i.e., modular distance, asynchronous) on the following dates:

• October 5, 2023 (Thursday)
• October 31, 2023 (Tuesday)
• November 3, 2023 (Friday)

This means that students will not attend physical classes on these dates but will instead do their lessons using blended learning modalities. The DepEd encourages all school heads and teachers to participate in the World Teachers' Day celebration and fulfill their election-related duties.

It is important to note that this memo applies only to ALS, public elementary and secondary schools, and community learning centers. Private schools have the discretion to implement their policies in line with the World Teachers' Day celebration and the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.

In light of this, the DepEd reminds the public that education is a shared responsibility and encourages parents and guardians to support their children's blended learning activities during the said dates.

The DepEd emphasizes that the World Teachers' Day celebration is a time to honor and appreciate teachers' contributions to the nation's development. It is also a time to reflect on teachers' challenges and find ways to support and empower them. The DepEd recognizes that teachers are essential in shaping the country's future, and that their role in nation-building must be valued and respected.

The DepEd's guidance on the conduct of classes in the upcoming National and World Teachers' Day celebration, as well as the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections, underscores the importance of education and the vital role of teachers in shaping the future of the country. The DepEd calls on all parties involved to support and empower teachers and to work together towards a brighter future for the next generation.
