DepEd to equip connectivity, 21st-century skills to learners

The Department of Education (DepEd) is unwavering in its commitment to providing students with efficient internet connectivity, enabling them to acquire essential 21st-century skills and stay abreast of digital educational advancements.

In a post-State of the Nation Address (SONA) discussion held in Pasay City, DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa emphasized that this strategic direction will tackle various challenges in basic education, particularly those exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Recognizing the perennial issues of classroom shortages and a lack of teachers, Poa assured that DepEd would continue to hire more educators and build additional classrooms in collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). To ensure resilience, disaster-resistant classrooms are also in the agency's plans. However, Poa acknowledged the difficulties in catching up with these issues, prompting them to explore a second track - leveraging technology.

During his second SONA, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. acknowledged the importance of learning from the pandemic's lessons. Alternative delivery modes and blended learning methodologies have been adopted to ensure uninterrupted learning.

Under its two-track approach, DepEd has been actively institutionalizing relevant and innovative reforms to recalibrate the curriculum, provide rapid and responsive delivery of education services, and prioritize the well-being of both learners and teachers.

One of the significant changes implemented this year is the shift away from suspending classes during natural or man-made disasters. While in-person classes may be suspended, learning continuity remains a priority in the agency's learning recovery mode. This adaptation aims to maximize the educational process even in challenging circumstances.

Moreover, DepEd seeks to address the issue of school congestion by tapping into technology through blended learning. Integrating technology into education is seen as an effective approach to decongest schools more efficiently than merely implementing shifting schedules.

The agency continues to provide learners with e-learning materials, empowering them with essential 21st-century skills valuable for local employment opportunities and potential jobs abroad.

With these progressive steps, DepEd envisions a more inclusive and adaptive education system that prepares Filipino learners to thrive in an increasingly digital world. By harnessing the power of technology, the agency aspires to create a future where all students can access quality education and contribute meaningfully to society, both nationally and internationally.
