Mother Tongue subject to be replaced by SiKaP Curriculum

The Department of Education (DepEd) has announced the removal of the Mother Tongue subject from the K-12 curriculum. The Mother Tongue subject, which teaches students about their native language and culture, will be replaced by the SiKaP curriculum.

Sikap is a transdisciplinary curriculum that aims to develop active learners by cultivating important skills based on the Big Ideas of Civics, Art and Culture, History, and Health that demonstrate identity, creativity, wellness, and social engagement towards becoming holistic Filipinos with 21st-century skills.

According to DepEd, the new curriculum aims to strengthen the learners' mastery of Filipino and English while also developing their critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and character development.

"Ang Sikap ay isang transdisiplinaryong kurikulum na naglalayong makahubog ng isang aktibong mag-aaral sa pamamagitan ng paglinang ng mahahalagang kasanayang hango sa Malalim na Kaisipan (Big Ideas) ng Sibika, Sining at Kultura, Kasaysayan, at Kagalingang Pangkalusugan na nagpapamalas ng pagkakakilanlan, pagkamalikhain, pagkamalusog at pakikipag-ugnayan sa kapwa at sa iba pang aspekto ng lipunan tungo sa pagiging holistikong Pilipinong taglay ang ika-21 siglong kasanayan."

"We believe that the Sikap curriculum will prepare our students better for the challenges of the future. It is aligned with our vision of producing holistically developed graduates who are equipped with the skills and values necessary to succeed in life," DepEd official said.

The implementation of the Sikap curriculum is part of the government's efforts to improve the quality of education in the country and produce globally competitive learners.
