All public school teachers to receive laptops with e-learning materials

UPDATE:
The Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones, said “we are initiating blended or distance learning as well as the use of different approaches and various ways to reach the students” .

Distance learning or distance education refers to a form of education wherein there is physical separation of teachers and students during instruction.

It entails the use of various technologies in order to facilitate student-teacher and student-student communication in the absence of face-to-face interaction.

To make this possible, she said the DepEd is eyeing to provide “laptops for all teachers.”
Meanwhile, Undersecretary for Administration Alain Del Pascua said in order to provide teachers the needed assistance for distance learning—particularly on the issuance of laptops, DepEd needs funds for it.

“The direction is to provide a laptop for each teacher,” said Usec. Pascua. “About P27 billion is needed to make that dream a reality,” Pascua added.

Asked if the provision for laptop for each teacher is possible before the formal school opening in August 24, he said: “How I wish we have the funds and that we can do it before August 24.”

DepEd will also release a Learning Management System that will contain an item bank that will measure all the competencies in the curriculum. This will be used to randomly create standardized questionnaires that can be used for the National Achievement Test (NAT), quizzes and periodical tests. When a learner completes a test, the Learning Management System will also recommend e-Learning resources for items or competencies which a learner was not able to answer correctly. As such, tests and quizzes will become a tool for learners to understand which competencies they are weak in and what learning resources are available to help them understand these competencies.

This is our vision for ICT in education, which is part and parcel of the DepEd blueprint for Public Schools of the Future, which the Office of the Undersecretary of Administration and the entire Administration Strand has crafted. It is not about delivering high tech equipment to the schools. It is about providing teachers with the skills and tools to facilitate the process of learning. It is very much centered on the learner, giving them the appropriate information and resources to learn on their own and understand the core competencies in our curriculum.
