Gov’t can afford workers’ higher salaries, coming sooner than later

Good news to all gov’t employees - President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s push for higher pay of government employees, especially teachers and nurses under a Salary Standardization Law (SSL) V would be implemented sooner than later, given ample government resources to finance its employees’ salary increase.

“We normally wait three to four years before moving to SSL 5. However, the President decided to propose the SSL. We have done the numbers and we can afford it,” assured by Department of Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III in an interview.

Dominguez said DBM Officer-in-Charge Janet B. Abuel had already come up with the initial estimate on the amount needed to level-up the salaries of government personnel, and it was “well-within” what the government can afford, without saying the exact figure.

Dominguez said the proposed SSL V Bill was already filed in the 18th Congress. They have yet to determine if the proposed bill will already be implemented next year.
