Malacañang: Duterte not dropping promise to double teachers’ salary

Malacañang said President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has not forgotten his promise to double the salary of teachers despite just a brief mention of it in his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday.

Duterte asked the Congress to approve pay hike for government workers, including teachers and nurses, during his SONA 2019.

“I believe that it is now time for Congress to approve a new version of the Salary Standardization Law. Ngayon na. To the teachers, who toil and work tirelessly to educate our young, kasali na po dito iyong hinihingi niyo. Hindi naman masyadong malaki pero it will ride you over,” Duterte said.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said that the President has not forgotten about his promise to double the salary of teachers but said the passage of a new salary standardization law is a temporary solution during his Thursday press briefing,

Panelo said, “Ibig sabihin ni Presidente, habang wala pa yung budget ‘yan muna. Pupunta tayo doon. Hindi ba, ilang beses niya na ring sinabi yun, eh. Hinahanapan nga ng source. Pati nga DBM naghahanap din, eh.”

“Definitely he’s not dropping his promise. Love niya mga teachers, eh,” he added.
